Andrea Cesalpino’s De Plantis libri XVI (1583) and the Transformation of Medical Botany in the 16th Century: Edition, Translation, and Commentary on Book I

En 1583, Andrea Cesalpino (1524-1603), botaniste, médecin et philosophe italien, publia ses De Plantis libri XVI. Ce faisant, il fut le premier scientifique de la modernité à étudier la botanique indépendamment de la médecine, transformant le mode de connaissance des plantes jusqu’alors dominant. Le présent volume traite du livre I, dans lequel Cesalpino pose les fondements de son approche aristotélicienne du monde végétal, tout en proposant des innovations en matière de morphologie et de systématique. Il contient une édition du texte latin de ce livre, avec sa première traduction en langue moderne, en plus d’une introduction originale dans laquelle les auteurs reconstruisent l’itinéraire de Cesalpino, depuis la tradition ancienne et médiévale jusqu’à la Renaissance, ainsi que la position de Cesalpino. La traduction est suivie d’un commentaire, comportant les éléments nécessaires à une interprétation correcte, puis d’index des termes techniques et des noms de plantes.

In 1583, Italian botanist, physician, and philosopher Andrea Cesalpino (1524-1603) published De Plantis libri XVI. In so doing, he was the first early modern scientist who witnessed a transformation of the previous prevalent knowledge of plants and studied botany independently from medicine. The present volume deals with Book I in which Cesalpino laid down the principles of his Aristotelian approach to the plant world, and also presented his innovations in plant morphology and systematics. It offers an edition of the Latin text of this book, with its first-ever translation into a modern language, in addition to an original introductory essay in which the authors reconstruct Cesalpino’s itinerary from the ancient and the medieval tradition to the Renaissance, and Cesalpino’s position. The translation in followed by a commentary that includes elements for a correct interpretation, and indexes of technical terms and plant names.
